Valentine’s Day on February 14th

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, is a special occasion marked in many countries worldwide. As the day approaches, hearts are filled with excitement. Couples select special gifts, make plans, and prepare meals to celebrate. Although some see it as a part of popular culture, its origins date back to ancient Rome and are rooted in old tales. Let’s explore the stories behind the origin of Valentine’s Day.

The History of Valentine’s Day

In the 3rd century AD, Roman Emperor Claudius II banned soldiers from getting married in order to strengthen his army. During this time, many soldiers had to leave their loved ones to join battles. Women waiting for their partners and men in the army longed for the day they could return home and fulfill their dream of marriage while also wishing for an end to the wars.

During this period, when marriage was forbidden, a priest named Saint Valentine secretly performed weddings to unite lovers. Of course, this was no easy feat. Saint Valentine fought hard to keep these weddings a secret. However, as the secret weddings became more widespread, word eventually reached the Emperor. Furious that his orders were being disobeyed, Claudius II reacted harshly and had Saint Valentine executed on February 14th, 270 AD. According to legend, in the following years, lovers would gather on this date each year to commemorate Saint Valentine.

Another story linked to the origin of Valentine’s Day is tied to a Roman festival known as Lupercalia. This festival was held in Rome to ward off evil spirits and cleanse the city, ensuring health and prosperity.

According to sources, celebrations lasted from February 13th to 15th. During this festival, dedicated to Lada, the goddess of fertility, it was believed that single men and women would find their true love. In the mid-February celebrations, men would draw names of women from a box, and the name they picked would determine the woman they would meet and spend the day with.

This tradition of pairing continued for some time, but eventually, the church abolished the practice and declared February 14th as the day to honor Saint Valentine. From these stories, it’s clear that Valentine’s Day was originally a day to commemorate Saint Valentine.

Over time, it evolved into a global celebration. As it became more popular, its traditional meaning took a back seat, and its commercial aspect became more prominent. While expressing love to our significant others shouldn’t be limited to a single day, this occasion offers a great opportunity to surprise our loved ones.
