He carefully selected ingredients that would represent the colors of the Italian flag. Additionally, he paid great attention to ensuring the pizza was simple yet delicious. The queen was so impressed by these qualities that Esposito named this creation “Pizza Margherita” in her honor.

Ingredients Needed for Pizza Margherita

For the Dough;

  • 2,5 cups flour
  • 2,5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 dessert spoon dry yeast
  • 1/2 dessert spoon salt
  • 1/2 dessert spoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup lukewarm water

For the Sauce;

  • 3 large, ripe tomatoes
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

For the Topping;

  • 150 grams grated mozzarella cheese
  • 8-10 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for drizzling)

How to Make Pizza Margherita?

  1. Peel the tomatoes and grate them.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan.
  3. Grate the garlic and add it to the pan.
  4. Saute lightly for about 1 minute.
  5. Add the grated tomatoes.
  6. Stir in salt, black pepper, and oregano.
  7. Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes. While it cools, prepare the dough.
  8. Add dry yeast and sugar into lukewarm water and mix.
  9. Wait about 10 minutes for the yeast to activate.
  10. Then, sift the flour into a mixing bowl, add salt, and mix.
  11. Create a well in the center and add olive oil and the yeast mixture.
  12. Knead until you get a smooth dough (about 8-10 minutes).
  13. Shape the dough into a ball and wrap it in plastic wrap or cover it with a clean cloth.
  14. Let it rise in a warm place for about half an hour.
  15. Divide the risen dough into equal portions.
  16. Sprinkle flour over them to prevent sticking.
  17. Roll out the dough into round shapes using a rolling pin.
  18. Spread the prepared tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a little space around the edges.
  19. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the dough on it.
  20. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough.
  21. Spread the grated mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
  22. Bake in a preheated 220°C oven for about 15 minutes until the cheese melts.
